The Issue aims to address current problems facing Australia in the global environment, with an emphasis on cultural, social, and political divides. The Issue will present each topic in the form of a concise, well-balanced, and informed mini-documentary. These mini-documentaries will give our audience an insight to these complex topics from multiple perspectives, showing sources and experts from different sides of the issue.

The first topic to be tackled by The Issue is the proposed cut to penalty rates by the Australian Government. Penalty rates are higher pay rates for individuals working during weekends and public holidays. The most affected will be casual and part-time workers in industries such as retail, hospitality, and food industries. With a large percentage of these industries employing foreign workers, as well as young people, this topic has deep cultural and social implications to Australia’s economy.

The Issue will cover for this topic in a mini-doco from three perspectives; interviewing a foreign worker who will be affected by the penalty rate cuts, a business owner in an industry that pays penalty rates to employees, as well as an economist from RMIT. The aim is to get information from these individuals about how penalty rate cuts will affect the livelihood of those currently receiving penalty rates, those who pay the penalty rates, as well as an expert opinion on how penalty rate cuts will affect industries and the Australian economy as a whole.

As there will be three subjects interviewed, filming will take in three locations over 2-3 days (tentatively) in the first week of May (1st - 5th).

Location 1: Foreign Worker, filmed at individual's home (Possible alternative location at protest provided it takes place during May)

Location 2: Small Business owner, filmed at cafe in Melbourne CBD

Location 3: RMIT Economist, filmed in office at RMIT City Campus
